The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) proposed four outcomes for the SoTL:
- Fostering significant and long-lasting student learning
- Enhancing the practice and profession of teaching
- Bringing faculty’s work as teachers the recognition and prestige afforded to other forms of scholarly work
- Making teaching methods public, open to critical evaluation, and usable by others
