Rick McWhorter '84 named Alumnus of the Year

The Texas Wesleyan Alumni Association is pleased to announce the 2023 Alumnus of the Year award is Rick McWhorter '84. Rick is a member of the Texas Wesleyan board of trustees and is passionate about helping our students and campus thrive. 

Rick McWhorter grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Texas Wesleyan College with an accounting degree in 1984. Rick is a first-generation college graduate and was able to attend Texas Wesleyan on an academic scholarship. Rick worked full-time while carrying a full schedule of classes at Texas Wesleyan. He credits the caring and engaged professors and staff for his success, both scholastically and professionally. 

After graduation, he took a job with Coopers & Lybrand, one of the “Big 8” accounting firms at the time. After a two-year stent with Coopers, Rick worked in accounting for Colonial Savings & Loan / Fort Worth Mortgage. For the past 33+ years, Rick has worked for Texas Health Resources, where he started as an internal auditor at Harris Methodist Health System and now holds the position of Chief Financial Officer for the largest not-for-profit health care system in north Texas.

Rick is committed to community and professional service. He is currently serving as a member of the board and executive committee for Texas Wesleyan University and is Texas Wesleyan’s current chair for its Finance and Audit Committee. Rick has previously chaired the healthcare education committee for the Texas Society of CPAs, served a three-year term on the United Way of Tarrant County board, and a three-year term on the Advisory Board of the Boy Scouts – Circle 10. Rick also served as a Fort Worth Police Reserve Officer for eight years and was stationed out of the Nashville station, just down the street from Texas Wesleyan.

Rick lives in Fort Worth with his wife Laura. They enjoy traveling and spending time with their children and five grandchildren.

About the Alumni Medal Dinner
Each year, Texas Wesleyan University honors distinguished alumni and friends. Their achievements and contributions are amazing reflections of the University, and we are honored to celebrate and recognize them each year.

This year’s Alumni Medal Dinner will be held at the Fort Worth Club on Friday, Oct. 20. The reception begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and program at 7 p.m.

The event is open to all alumni, friends and faculty and staff, and tickets are $70 per person. Register online to reserve your seat, and be sure to register for other homecoming weekend activities as well.
