Theatre professor Connie Whitt-Lambert and recent graduate Mercedes Kuhn will have original plays produced in Kansas City, Missouri later this fall. The plays will be presented in October at The MOD Gallery as part of a partnership with The Midwest Dramatists Center.
The two members of the #Ramily are both members of The Dramatists Guild, whose mission is committed to shepherding playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists through every stage of their careers by providing community, advocacy, contract reviews and professional development to aspiring and professional dramatists working in the United States. Kuhn joined the Guild while she was a student at Texas Wesleyan.
Whitt-Lambert's play, Peace & Pieces, and Kuhn's play, Not This Time, both share the same setting: a park bench, which was a pivotal aspect of this current development series of plays. Whitt-Lambert was asked by the producers of the event to contribute plays to the Dramatists Center's new development series, with a forthcoming second play currently in development. Whitt-Lambert, having just mentored Kuhn on last season's Letters From The Library, suggested that Kuhn contribute an original play of her own; Not This Time was selected.
Kuhn, whose original play Letters From The Library was produced as part of Theatre Wesleyan's 2024-2025 season, graduated from Texas Wesleyan in May. “As soon as I read that draft, I knew what a special story this was,” Whitt-Lambert said in a previous Rambler interview. “We are dedicated to encouraging and supporting student playwrights, and whenever possible, we fully produce an original student work as part of that development.”
The two Rams shared their excitement at the prospect of not only having their plays produced together, but also continuing their mentorship and collaboration long after Kuhn's graduation.
