ABOUT THE PLAY
A seminal memory play of the American theatre, The Glass Menagerie follows Amanda Wingfield (Ashley Spyker), a faded remnant of Southern gentility who now lives in a cramped St. Louis apartment with her aimless son, Tom (Trent Cole), and her debilitatingly shy daughter, Laura (Maddox Hawthorne). With their father absent and the Great Depression in motion, the siblings find comfort in their distractions - alcohol, movies and writing for Tom and a collection of glass animals for Laura. When a gentleman caller (Tristan Andrews) arrives for dinner, the Wingfield family is flooded with hope. But it’s uncertain if this mysterious visitor will change things for the better or shatter a family’s fragile illusions.
The cast, production team, and crew include Texas Wesleyan theatre majors and minors pursuing Bachelor or Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, as well as members of the faculty and staff. The initial members of the production team include Karen Potter (director), Ricky Olivarez (stage manager), Madisyn Savard (assistant stage manager), Joe Allen Brown (scenic design), Rocky Olguin (costume design), Elizabeth Holmes (lighting design), Pella LeFever (sound design), and Alexandra Bennett (props design).
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Tennessee Williams wrote fiction and motion picture screenplays, but is acclaimed primarily for his plays, nearly all of which are set in the South. He drew heavily on his family experiences in his writings.
When The Glass Menagerie originally premiered on Broadway in 1945, it not only changed Williams’ life “irrevocably” by bringing his work to national attention, but it revolutionized American theatre. A Streetcar Named Desire, The Night of the Iguana and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are some of his other masterpieces.
Among his many awards, Williams won two Pulitzer Prizes and four New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. In addition to 25 full length plays, Williams produced dozens of short plays and screenplays, two novels, a novella, 60 short stories, more than 100 poems and an autobiography. His works have been translated into at least 27 languages, and countless productions of his work have been staged around the world.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of The Glass Menagerie, noted as Williams’ most personal work, which continues to captivate and overwhelm audiences around the world.
