DNAP Professor Paul Austin

Paul Austin, Ph.D., CRNA, professor of nurse anesthesia, had his "5 Burning Questions About Patient Warming" article published in the May 2017 issue of Outpatient Surgery Magazine, a leading trade publication for administrators, nurses, physicians, device manufacturers and others working in the outpatient surgery setting.

The article discusses one of the most common complaints of surgical patients–Hypothermia. Austin addresses these five questions, as they relate to the method of force-air warming:

  1. Why does warming matter?
  2. What is the best way to warm patients?
  3. Who is most susceptible to hypothermia?
  4. Is pre-warming of the patient necessary before going into the operating room?
  5. Can forced-air warming be blamed for surgical site infection?

Austin has presented on this topic at the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Annual Meeting (2013) and at the Maryland AANA meeting (2014). He has also been published in AORN J (2013), the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal (2015) and the Annual Review of Nursing Research (2017).
