Michelle Payne, Ph.D. arrived at Texas Wesleyan University as a non-traditional student wanting a career change and so completed a B.S. in political science and legal studies (’96), an M.Ed. (‘97), and a J.D. (‘99). In 2013, she completed a Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas and is the current coordinator of the government and legal studies program and associate professor of political science at Texas Wesleyan University.

As a student, Payne participated in numerous academic honor societies and events, the MD Anderson Pre-Professional Program (3PR), study abroad and Model Arab League, worked two jobs (one as a student worker) and co-parented five children.

As a professor, Payne describes her job “as the best job in the world.”  She seeks to instill the same intellectual curiosity, respectful individualism, critical and ethical thinking and love of education and community just as many others did for her not so long ago. Much like her own mentors, Payne divides her time between teaching, coaching mediation, ethics and moot court, professional development, 3PR, advising, mentoring new faculty, sharing ideas with colleagues and always learning from those around her.
