Jane Moore celebrates 50 years at Texas Wesleyan

12.11.2015 | By:

Jane Moore, Ph.D., has been teaching math at Texas Wesleyan since 1965.

She has taught thousands of students over the years and her impact on the university and the community is exponential.

Half a century later and with no plans to retire, Moore continues to dedicate herself to improving other people’s lives through education.

Why?

Simply put, Moore says, “I love the students, and I love math.”

Moore’s teaching philosophy of personalized attention was right at home at Texas Wesleyan from day one, and 50 years later, the combination still adds up.

“Jane is hardworking, sincere, and committed to giving every student the individual attention that he or she deserves,” says Marcel Satsky Kerr, Ph. D. professor of psychology. “She cares deeply about education and its ability to change lives.”

Love of learning

Moore’s commitment to education doesn’t stop in the classroom. She is the original grant writer and director of Texas Wesleyan’s Upward Bound Math and Science Program with the U.S. Department of Education, which supports high school students as they prepare for college.

In 1995, she began leading TexPrep, a summer pre-engineering program that prepares middle school and high school students in the Fort Worth area for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

But Moore says that the highlight of her career is the Expanding Your Horizons program, which is an annual conference of math and science workshops for seventh- and eighth-grade girls. Each year, about 300 young women attend and seventy professional women from the metroplex present STEM-related workshops. The 28th conference will be held in April 2016.

“I find a lot of joy helping young girls understand and gain confidence in math,” Moore said.

Even after 50 years in higher education, Moore is not done teaching.

“I love math - it’s still fun to sit down and work problems,” Moore says.

Moore is currently preparing for her students’ upcoming final exams and will continue her legacy at Texas Wesleyan this spring.
