Prepare to Apply

These resources can be very helpful when preparing your Sumners Scholarship application:


Texas Wesleyan University and the Sumners Foundation seek dynamic, motivated students who embrace civic responsibility and will enhance the campus, community and the scholarship program through personal involvement.

Generally, students will apply in their sophomore, or 2nd year, and retain the scholarship for their junior and senior, or 3rd and 4th years. Students planning to transfer to Texas Wesleyan may apply, as long as they have completed 60 academic hours before the fall term in which the scholarship begins.

Specifically, to be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Have completed 60 academic hours by the beginning of the fall term in which the scholarship begins.
  • Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
  • Be in good standing with the university.
  • Have a record of participation in campus or civic activities that benefit the university and/or the community at large.
  • Have 3 to 4 semesters remaining at Texas Wesleyan University until graduation, beginning with the upcoming Fall semester.

Submitting Your Application

Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year are due by December 7, 2022.

Complete, print and sign the TXWES Sumners Application. A completed application, an official community college and/or university transcript(s) reflecting all academic coursework and a photograph must be provided to the Texas Wesleyan Office of Financial Aid by TBA for the 2023-2024 award.  You may also submit the required documents via email to by the same date.

Additionally, please include a professional resume outlining all honors and awards received, extracurricular activities and leadership and work experiences. Finally, an essay (of no more than 750 words) narrating your personal background, extraordinary life experiences, leadership roles performed, reasons for selecting your particular field of study and your ambitions for the future is required.

Choice applicants will be asked to complete a personal interview with representative trustees from the Sumners Foundation on an arranged date. Final selection is competitive and determined by the strength of the application, resume, essay and personal interview with Trustees.
