Jay Beavers graduated from Texas Wesleyan in 1964 with a degree in English. He went on to get his master's in theology and doctorate in ministry from SMU, and served as a minister and district superintendent in the United Methodist Church until his retirement. Jay still believes in service and volunteers at his church and in the community, in addition to serving on the Alumni Board. Here’s what he had to say about his Texas Wesleyan experience:
Why did you choose Texas Wesleyan?
When I felt the call to ministry, Rev. Lamar Smith (now doctor and former interim president of Texas Wesleyan) helped me transfer from a state college to Texas Wesleyan in preparation for seminary. That was the best career move I ever made.
What is your favorite Texas Wesleyan memory?
My favorite Texas Wesleyan memory is of the many faculty, staff and students who warmly welcomed me and helped me to become a success at Texas Wesleyan. I had not experienced that at the state college where I started my journey in higher education.
What has been most interesting about your career?
Preaching, teaching and helping people to experience God's love through building relationships based on faith and love with God and with people is what I find most interesting about the Christian ministry.
How did TXWES contribute to your success and/or preparedness for your career?
TXWES renewed my sense of humanity and compassion, helped me to have confidence in my talents and abilities, and provided me with the professional foundation I needed for the future.
