KXAS-NBC 5 visited campus to cover an event that has become an annual tradition at Texas Wesleyan University.
Over two days, nearly 300 Fort Worth ISD students experienced their First Day of College, held on campus for the 19th year. The two-day camp is a partnership between the Texas Wesleyan School of Education and FWISD’s Newcomers Program.
“Many of these children come from countries where maybe less than 10 percent of the adult population has a college education. So, it’s important to expose them to college,” Elizabeth Ward, Ph.D., associate professor of education and director of field experiences at Texas Wesleyan told NBC 5.
The young students participated in lessons in reading & writing and physics, with more than 40 TXWES students leading the lessons and getting invaluable experience on their road to a career in the classroom.
Half Price Books also donated 1,000 books providing something for the young learners to take home.
The Texas Wesleyan School of Education is known for providing students with hands-on experience, giving them a distinct advantage in the education field. Small classes and one-on-one mentorship with faculty keep them on the path towards a successful career.
Robert J. Wilson, Ph.D. served as event coordinator with other faculty taking part including:
