The Texas Legislature recently passed Senate Bill 11, which requires public universities in Texas to allow firearms on campus. On June 13, Governor Abbott signed the bill into law. The law will go into effect August 2016.

Texas Wesleyan University, as a member of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT), successfully lobbied the legislature to permit private universities to opt out of the requirement.

To exercise our legislative opt-out authority, we will consult with stakeholders and make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. Texas Wesleyan faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in this consultation process by leaving a comment in my idea box.
