The Sooner Athletic Conference has named Head Coach Brennen Shingleton as the SAC Coach of the Year.
Shingleton, in his fourth season as head coach of the men's basketball team, led the Rams to a 23-6 record in the regular season and has had the team ranked as high as 3rd nationally. The Rams won the SAC regular season championship with a league record of 14-4 and have earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
Several players where named to the SAC 2015-16 Men's Basketball All-Conference team. jerell Ellis was named SAC Player of the Year and named to the 1st-team, while Sam Akano and Chris Gracela were named to the 2nd-team. Dion Rogers Was an Honorable Mention pick.
The Rams are set to begin play in the SAC Tournament which is being held at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie this week. As the top seed, Texas Wesleyan has a bye through the first round and will open with a quarterfinal contest at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday against the winner of St. Gregory's and John Brown.
The All-Conference team consists of 26 players: six on the 1st-team, five on the 2nd-team, six on the 3rd-team, and nine honorable mention selections.
Jerell Ellis - 1st-team - SAC Player of the Year
Ellis, a 6'4" guard from San Antonio, has had a remarkable senior season after returning from a season-ending knee injury late last year. He currently leads the team in scoring at 18.3 points per game, while shooting 46.4% from the field, 42.9% from 3-point range, and 84.6% at the free throw line.
Ellis ranks 5th in the conference in scoring, 7th in field goal percentage, 3rd in 3-point percentage, 10th in made 3-pointers and 2nd in free throw percentage. His 493 points this season give him 1,024 points in his two year career which ranks 20th on Texas Wesleyan's all-time scoring list.
Chris Gracela - 2nd-team - SAC Sportsmanship Award
Gracela, a 6'2" senior guard from Haltom City, TX, also received the SAC Sportsmanship Award. Gracela leads the SAC in rebounding at 10 rebounds per game. He ranks 4th in the NAIA in total rebounds (296), while leading the nation with 4.3 offensive rebounds per game. He is averaging 8.4 points per game and has turned in six double-doubles and a 19 rebound performance at USAO.
Sam Akano - 2nd-team
Akano, a 6'5" senior forward from Philadelphia, PA, is the team's second leading scorer at 15.1 points per game while shooting 46.9% from the floor and grabbing 5.3 rebounds per game. He scored 20 or more points seven times this year. His 424 points give him 1,043 points in his two seasons at Texas Wesleyan to rank 18th on the school's all-time scoring list (just three points behind Brian Wanamaker (2009-11).
Dion Rogers - Honorable Mention
Rogers, a 6'0" junior point guard from North Brunswick, NJ, ranked third on the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game while handing out 3.9 assists per game and snaring 1.6 steals per game. He ranks 6th in the conference in total assists (102) and in steals per game while rating 8th in assist/turnover ratio (2.02).
