TXWES students spice up their semester with a salsa dancing lesson

TXWES’ celebration of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is in full swing, as evidenced on a recent fall afternoon, when exuberant tropical music filled Nicholas Martin Hall and a group of enthusiastic students learned the basics of three popular Latin dances — salsa, cumbia and bachata. Once students had learned several steps and turns, they practiced and received pointers from Salsa at the Gardens dance instructors, Irma Naranjo, Rosy Flores and Sal Morales. Later on, students were surprised to see Associate Professor of Spanish Dr. Amy Bell, perform an impromptu salsa dance with Mr. Morales.

The event was just one of a series of fun, engaging and educational events sponsored by the TXWES Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month Committee. There is still time to catch a couple more free events, including a performance by Ollin Cuautli Danza Azteca (featuring Upward Bound Math and Science Coordinator, Abel Cerros, and his wife, Spanish major, Karina Orona Bernal) on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. on the Kay Granger Mall and a carne asada (cookout) on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Stella Fire Pit.
