Panelists at Const Day Event 2022

Although Sept. 17 marked 235 years since the drafting of the original US Constitution in 1787, Texas Wesleyan Sumners Scholars organized a Constitution Day event on Thursday, Sept. 15 during free period with speakers, trivia, door prizes and food.

The event offered gavel-styled pencils, pocket Constitutions and cake before testing attendees knowledge of Constitutional trivia. Door prizes included Constitution-styled t-shirts and gift cards.

The speakers for the event were Judge Louis E. Sturns, University President Frederick G. Slabach and Professor Michelle Payne. Each speaker talked about their personal connection to the Constitution before a discussion was opened regarding the current debate about the Constitution as either a living document or a document that ought to be interpreted according to the original understanding at the time of writing.

Sumners Scholars also hosted a voter registration table at the event.

The Sumners Scholarship provides a $5,500 scholarship each semester during a student's junior and senior year and offers students the opportunity to attend special conferences and activities and engage in community service.
