All students, faculty and staff are cordially invited to participate in University College Day (UCD) on April 9. This year’s event has a “Think Global, Start Local” theme, and will run from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The due date for proposal submission is Feb. 9 at midnight. This allows time for review, scheduling and development of the program.

How to participate

Have a great proposal for UCD 2014? Here's what you do:

1. Read the submission instructions on the UCD website.

2. Get all of the necessary information together, and submit your proposal online.

Proposals are submitted to the UCD committee for review via a new Web-based submission form.

Computer science student Kendall Baker, with the help of his advisor, Dr. Yukong Zhang, redesigned the form for this year’s event. Kendall has worked long and hard on this new form, and his contribution is sure will make a lasting impact on UCD for years to come.

The proposal submission form should be open for submissions this week. Please bear with us if we experience technical difficulty. When submitting a proposal, Firefox is the recommended Web browser.

On the UCD website, you can find instructions for submitting your proposals as well as submission criteria.

Students must have a faculty advisor who will help them refine their topic, review their proposal, assist with the submission and guide the development of their presentation.

Speakers who know sustainability

The keynote speaker, Katharine Hayhoe, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Public Administration program at Texas Tech University as well as the director of Tech’s Climate Science Center. She will present some science behind climate change and share her personal story as a scientist who is also an Evangelical Christian.

The alumnus address will be given by Stefan Stamoulis, founder of Prospector Drilling and Tool Company and Hydrogeologic/Environmental Testing. Stamoulis has been a good friend to the University, and he holds patents for technology to reduce greenhouse gases emissions from landfills.

Both speakers feed into this year’s theme of sustainability.

About the event

UCD consists mainly of presentations by students with faculty advisors on topics relating to research, class projects and other activities demonstrating collaboration and critical thinking on campus.

This year, there is a special poster event for the Blue + Gold = GREEN Committee.

The Blue + Gold = GREEN Committee encourages students to submit poster session proposals that showcase innovative and practical methods for reducing waste, recycling and participating in sustainability across the community, college campus, organization, business or other institutional settings.

Presentations can take the form of posters, oral presentations, panel discussion and performances. Students present for approximately 20 minutes, and the poster session will last about two hours.

Students may come and go during their poster presentations.

Thank you for your support and participation in UCD 2014. Both faculty and students are a critical part of the collaboration that makes University College Day a signature event for Texas Wesleyan University.
