Garry Jones is a 2013 graduate of Texas Wesleyan, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Political Science with departmental honors and graduated summa cum laude. Since graduating from Wesleyan, Garry has gone on to enjoy a career in politics and public service. Currently, Garry serves as Texas Political Director for the national organization Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) and Education Reform Now Advocacy. Before joining DFER, Garry was Chief of Staff to Texas Senator Beverly Powell, a fellow graduate of Texas Wesleyan and member of the Board of Trustees. As Sen. Powell’s Chief of Staff, Garry worked to advance the Senator’s policy priorities focused on higher education access, quality public schools for all Texas children and economic development for the North Texas region.

In 2018, Garry ran Beverly Powell’s Senate campaign where, together, they worked to defeat an incumbent senator and ran the most competitive and expensive state legislative level campaign in the state of Texas, earning praise as the “Best of the General Election” campaign in 2018 by Capitol Inside. Before moving back to Fort Worth to manage Powell’s campaign, Garry lived in Washington, D.C. where he worked for the Lone Star Project, a Texas-focused organization working on state legislative, congressional, statewide and local races across Texas.

Garry credits his success in the political area to his education from Texas Wesleyan, especially in political science classes taught by Dr. Ibrahim Salih and Dr. Michelle Payne. In 2012, Garry was awarded with the Hatton Sumners Scholarship for his commitment to studies in the areas of political science, history and American government. In 2012, Garry was also able to spend the fall semester in Ohio where he worked for President Obama’s reelection campaign. While serving on the President’s campaign, he completed internship credit and wrote a paper for credit about his experience working in the nation’s biggest battleground state. This opportunity to spend the semester away was only possible because of the commitment of Texas Wesleyan to ensuring students receive real-world experience outside the classroom.

As a student, Garry was an active member of the campus community where he served as SGA Secretary, Kappa Alpha Order Secretary and Vice President and was involved with the Model Arab League.
