Learn about domestic violence awareness, prevention at next Mitchell-Reed event

Join West Library for the Mitchell-Reed Community of Learners lecture series. Lisa Nichols of SafeHaven will be presenting for the next Mitchell-Reed Thursday, Sept. 18 from 12:15-1:30 p.m. in the Library Orientation Room. Don't forget to bring your own lunch; refreshments will be provided by the Office of the Provost, co-sponsors of the Mitchell-Reed Community of Learners lecture series. 

About the Speaker

Nichols is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S), a trained play therapist and a trained forensic evaluator. She has 13 years of experience providing clinical and counseling services to children, teens and adults recovering from child abuse, incest, witnessing violent crimes, domestic violence, depression, parental divorce and bereavement.

She will discuss topics including:

  • What is domestic violence?
  • What are the red flags of abusive relationships?
  • Why doesn’t she just leave the relationship?
  • Someone I care about is in an abusive relationship. How can I help?
  • Available resources for victims of domestic violence.

In addition to clinical experience, Nichols is a statewide public speaker on the topics of child abuse, domestic violence and animal-assisted therapy. Her work with abused children was featured in the Lifetime TV documentary "Terror At Home," and on AM620 Radio Disney. She has experience providing psychological testing, extended forensic assessments, providing civil and criminal court testimony and preparing children to testify in court.

Nichols has extensive experience working in the non-profit sector, including domestic violence agencies and Children’s Advocacy Centers. She recently maintained a private practice for 4 years in Southlake.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas Christian University in 1999 and her master’s degree in Psychology from Houston Baptist University in 2001. She is currently the Clinical Coordinator at SafeHaven of Tarrant County where she counsels victims of domestic violence, provides trainings and supervises clinical staff and interns.
