Don’t be overwhelmed by the new semester. Here are the top 5 tips from the Division of Student Affairs to help you get it started off right:

  • Attend Weeks of Welcome events

Getting the most out of college starts with getting the most out of college. Confused? Don’t be. Weeks of Welcome events will give you direct access to tons of the people, resources and skills you’ll need to be as successful as you can during your time at TXWES. Plus, at each event, you’ll earn points to redeem a free meal from the food trucks at the finale event. We promise you’ll get more than free tacos. But they certainly don’t hurt, right?

  • Get organized (and stick to it)

We’ll be honest: college will be one of the busiest times in your life, but it can also be one of the most fun. Making time for everything means staying on top of your priorities. Make a calendar in Outlook or use a planner. Start with your syllabi and go from there. Staying organized will make it much easier to decide if you really should go see that movie, or if you need to stay in to write that paper.

  • Introduce yourself to three new people

Unless you’re already a billionaire mogul, you’ll want to expand your network as far as you can. New people bring new opportunities, new experiences, new study-buddies and new friends. Start with the classic college icebreakers; what is your name? Where are you from? What is your major? What do you want to do with that? It is that simple. From there, it is up to you.

  • Meet your professors

You want to stand out … in a positive way. Introduce yourself to all of your professors in the first week of classes. This is a new time for both of you, so break the ice. Building this relationship will be helpful when you accidentally sleep through your alarm or when you need that recommendation letter.

  • Remember, everyone is new

New people, new sights on campus, new experiences—we are all new and ready to make an impression. Understand that it’s up to you create and set your own personal expectations. Consider how you will act inside and outside of the classroom, how you will make friends (and keep them), and how you will make lasting memories. Every semester is a fresh start.
