Texas Wesleyan University is committed to providing its students and employees with the opportunity to live, learn and work in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment. We strive to create this environment by cultivating a culture of diversity and inclusion at every level of our institution.
The mission of Student Diversity and Inclusion Programs is to assist in the engagement, academic success and retention of minoritized students, and offer guidance and support to these student populations through:
Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. Functionally, it means understanding that each individual is unique and recognizing and appreciating our individual differences as well as our similarities. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs and other ideologies. Our functional definition of diversity is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.
Inclusion exists when all individuals within a community are valued, respected, and heard irrespective of their social identities and can contribute fully to the community’s success. It requires dialogue and sharing of power between members of our community and for decisions to reflect the interests of all our diverse members. Full inclusion means a safer, more respectful environment that increases the sense of belonging for everyone on campus.
