Student Diversity and Inclusion Programs hosted the Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month Kickoff with a bang on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The university was proud to see many student organizations and community partners attend this important cultural event. Every year, student diversity hosts this month-long event and it keeps improving because of the support it has on campus. This year, the university hosted a taco food truck and enjoyed the TXWES Mariachi band play, dance and sing in celebration!
Rose Munoz, president of the Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO), and her team hosted a table at the event complete with Aguas Frescas and crafted colorful Siemprevivas for display. BESO’s purpose statement is to serve and support bilingual students, expand cultural awareness and unite bilingual and all education students at TXWES. Rose states the event “created a sense of belonging, pride and appreciation across our campus."
The Latinx Student Association (LSA) hosted a table to recruit new members and engage students with fun activities. When asked what she loved about the event, Sara Villatoro, LSA President, said, “I loved all the different diverse clubs that participated and how the event brought people together from various backgrounds. It was inspiring to see how each organization highlighted its unique culture, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and mutual respect. The music, food and vibrant performances made it even more special, truly representing the rich diversity within our community.”
A special thank you to the many student organizations and campus partners whose contributions made this month’s diverse programming possible, creating meaningful experiences for all. And thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating our vibrant culture and community.
